MONTESSORI
TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM
The University Montessori Teacher Training Program was established
to meet the substantial demand throughout Southern California for
highly trained and specialized Montessori teachers (guides).
The high quality preparation provided from the University of
California, Irvine Extension Program further assures that teachers
from the Training Program are best prepared to meet the challenges
of directing a Montessori classroom. The instructional
format of the program fulfills nationally recognized Montessori
teacher preparation and UCI Academic Senate standards. A
certificate from University Montessori Teacher Training Program is
granted to candidates who satisfactorily complete the program
requirements.
Academic phases
are arranged annually and adhere to the following schedule:

Preprimary Curriculum OR Infants and Toddlers
The program’s functional hours (Tuesday and Thursday evenings
and one Saturday each month) allow talented early childhood
educators to supplement their education with paid internship
positions. This accommodates teacher development time and
cost effective manner. The training offers a diverse and
comprehensive learning model through the participation of
experienced instructors that lead seminars, labs, and conduct
visitations according to their area of expertise. This
comprehensive training experience enhances the candidate’s
quality of education and training.
The classroom facilities for the academic portion of the training
are located at the University Montessori School of Irvine, Inc.,
which is on the UCI campus. This model facility and lab
school is the site of many professional educational tours and the
recipient of two architectural awards. The lab school
children’s program is licensed by the State of California,
accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC), and provides educational services through its
contractual agreements with the University of California Regents.
The location of the internship portion of the program will be
determined based upon the student’s individual needs,
availability, and other factors. Most models for internship
recommend that the intern work full time as a teacher assistant.
The intern receives valuable Montessori experience and is
typically paid a stipend by the practicum site. During
internship, students participate in the preparation of the
classroom environment and the guidance of the children while under
the supervision and guidance of a certified professional.
Students may earn certificates for both the preprimary and
infant-toddler age groups. Separate internships are required for both
certificates.
